Machine Learning

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics can be broadly defined as the application of computational technologies and statistics to the management and analysis of biological data. Major research efforts in these fields include sequence alignment, gene prediction, genome assembly, protein structural alignment, protein structure prediction, gene expression prediction, protein-protein interactions, and modeling of evolution. . Our research group has specialized in the analysis of the microbiota and its metagenome.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the combination of algorithms proposed with the purpose of creating machines that have the same capabilities as the human being, for a few years it has been present in our day to day at all hours in science, medicine and in technique. we are especially interested in automating activities such as decision making, problem solving and learning. An example is artificial neural networks and concolutional neural networks, used for automatic image identification. Python is normally used for processing.

Both ML and other AI methods are part of what is called Data Science, which integrates computation, statistics and AI.

Statistics

Statistics consists of methods, procedures and formulas that allow collecting information to later analyze it and draw relevant conclusions from it, its mathematical basis comes from probability. It can be said that it is Data Science and that its main objective is to improve the understanding of facts from the available information, although currently within Data Science computing and AI are also included. Procedures based on the R language are normally included, but each time Python.

The research group in Statistics, Bioinformatics and Data Science (BIOST3) is part of the Statistics Section of the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics of the UB, focuses its research on applying methods of computational statistics and Bayesian statistics to systems biological, with special emphasis on clinical, bioinformatics and biodiversity data. They often collaborate in the analysis of data from large experiments carried out by companies (biomedical, hospitals, technological, etc), thus extracting much more useful information. Within the research group, different competitive research projects, research contracts, doctoral theses and technology transfer to companies and society (software, articles, patents, etc.) are carried out.

El grup de recerca en Estadística, Bioinformàtica i Data Science (BIOST3) forma part de la Secció d’Estadística del Departament de Genètica, Microbiologia i Estadística de la UB, centra la seva recerca en aplicar mètodes d’estadística computacional i estadística bayesiana a sistemes biològics, amb especial èmfasi en dades clíniques, bioinformàtiques i de biodiversitat.
Col·laboren sovint en l’anàlisi de dades de grans experiments duts a terme per empreses (biomèdiques, hospitals, tecnològiques,
etc), extraient així molta més informació de gran utilitat. Dintre del grup de recerca es porten a terme diferents projectes de recerca competitius, contractes de recerca, tesis doctorals i transferència tecnològica a les empreses i societat (programaris, articles, patents, etc.).

THE SERVER
The BIOST3 group is coordinated by doctors Antonio Monleón and Javier Méndez and has had a high-performance Linux server (Ubuntu 18) since October 2018 (HPC: 40 cores Xeon SP 4114 2.2 GHz) with a card GPU RTXA4000 that allows you to perform intensive calculations in the fields of mathematics, statistics and bioinformatics, both for your own projects (statistical simulations, numerical calculations, "machine learning", neural networks, treatment of large volumes of data (big date), metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, transcriptomics, methylation, etc.), as well as to collaborate with other faculty and/or external research groups

El grup BIOST3, està coordinat pels doctors Antonio Monleón i Javier Méndez i disposa des d'octubre del 2018 d'un servidor Linux (Ubuntu 18) d'alt rendiment (HPC: 40 cores Xeon SP 4114 2,2 GHz) amb una targeta GPU RTXA4000 que permet realitzar càlculs intensius en els camps de les matemàtiques, l' estadística i la bioinformàtica, tant per als seus propis projectes (simulacions estadístiques, càlculs numèrics, "machine learning", xarxes neuronals, tractament de grans volums de dades (big data), metagenòmica, metatranscriptòmica, trasncriptòmica, metilació, etc.), com per a compatir amb d'altres grups d'investigació de la facultat i/o externs.
